The Trio

The Trio refers to the movement activities you have done so far: See Saw, See Saw Reverse and adds Patterning on the Back (see next activity on the list for instruction on how to do Patterning on the back). See Teacher's Guide for instructions about length of time for each activity in the Trio.

Handout:

Patterning On The Back

This is part of the Trio.

Purpose: To organize the brain at the Pons level. Turning the head to watch upper hand benefits eye function and the vestibular system. The cross pattern prepares the client for learning and alertness. Helps to establish hand dominance.

Note: Do NOT occlude an eye during this activity. Add this to the exercises this week along with march. You are working both the upper and lower parts of the brain with this combination.

Instructions: Client lies on back, shoes and socks off.

  • Right arm straight above head and right leg straight down.

  • Left arm relaxed at side, left leg up, bent at knee, calf parallel to the floor.

  • Head turns to look at "up" hand.

  • Simultaneously switch each limb to opposite position.

  • Count "one" each time client returns to "start" position.

  • Build to required repetitions and then add weights.

After client is proficient with this activity, they can do this activity to the beat of a metronome for added benefit; begin with 60 beats, then 40 beats, then try other speeds. Purchase a metronome at your local music supply store or you can use an online metronome at: www.metronomeonline.com.
